CAFE Update November 7, 2018

26 November 2018

Building Your Brand

CAFE is excited to be offering its 7th Annual Deans and Directors Retreat: Building Your Brand

“A brand is a name, term, design, symbol, or other feature that distinguishes an organization or product from its rivals in the eyes of the customer.” (Wikipedia)

We will hear from experts in communication, a professional who has had successful branding efforts in our industry, a leader in integrating social media in a branding program and our yearly favorite: Innovations Panels with feedback from our peers.

This year’s innovations panel will feature:

  • Dr. Frank Costantino (Monroe College) who will discuss their new Food Media Studies program
  • Mark Mistriner (Niagara Falls Culinary Institute) will describe their Brewing and Distilling Degrees
  • Ken Goldberg (Monroe College) who has studied the ramifications of Digital Learning

We are also introducing something new: our form of “Ted Talks” which we will call “Shared Solutions.”

These lunchtime short presentations will again feature peer sharing. Topics include:

  • “Who is the New Culinary Student?” How do you balance employer needs and relationships to this new type of student? (Leigh Uhlir from Kendall College)
  • “How do you say ‘yes’ to good opportunities that students can benefit from and discourage callers looking for freebies?” (Mo Montgomery, Pueblo Community College)
  • “Cobranding is a winning technique!” (Michael Carmel, Trident Technical College)

There’s lots more featured in this packed weekend for deans and directors of culinary/hospitality programs. We are taking the concept of “branding” seriously as more potential students have more choices than ever. How do you show/case your program?

The downtown location is terrific, and Charleston is known as a food destination. The Retreat begins with a Meet and Greet Friday night and ends with middle-of-the-day lunch on Sunday.
